Purpose: Head Start promotes the school readiness of young children from low-income families through agencies in their local community. Head Start and Early Head Start programs support the mental, social, and emotional development of children from birth to age 5. Description: Head Start is a Federal program for preschool children. Families must be at or below 100% of the national poverty index to be eligible for services. Priority is given to families that are: 1) income eligible, 2) have special needs and, 3) age eligible.
