The program is designed for individuals with no ophthalmologist. The project has helped over 1.7 million older Americans since 1986. Those eligible are matched with one of 7,000 volunteer ophthamologists nationwide. The physician provides a comprehensive medical eye examination and treatment for any condition diagnosed at the initial visit, for up to one year at no out-of-pocket expense. To receive a referral, one must be 65 years of age or older, a U.S. citizen or legal resident, not had an eye examination by an ophthalmologist in the last three years, and not belong to a doctor-restricted HMO plan or receive VA eye care benefits.
